Our History
The Butte Country Club was established in 1899 as the first country club in Montana. It was the first golf course in the state and the first course to boast all grass fairways and greens. The golf course was originally located east of what is now Blacktail Lane and south of Elizabeth Warren Avenue. At that time, Lake Avoca extended north from Elizabeth Warren Avenue to what is now the green on Hole #4. After Lake Avoca was drained, the course was moved to its present location and converted to the grounds you see here today. It’s amazing that the entire bottom portion of present holes 1, 2, 3, 4, 13 and 15 was at one time submerged under Lake Avoca. Although over a century has passed since its inception, Butte Country Club continues to be a recreational and social pillar within the city and surrounding community.

A Century of Golf at the B.C.C
— Pat Johnson, 1998
Nestled in this little town amidst the towering pines
Where gallows frames linger and evidence of mines
Is a town that whispers history, a town that smiles pride,
Where memories of yesterday, today are by our side.
A golf course that is aging—it’s near a century old.
A golf course with a history and stories, some untold.
‘Twas born in 1899 on South Montana Street,
But need for clay deposits brought the golf course its defeat.
It then moved to its present site, the course composed of sand,
But trouble hit the clubhouse soon when fire played its hand.
Montana’s first grass course was mowed in ’41, we’re told.
Years went by and progress came, old became what’s new.
The structure was rebuilt, and the grounds they changed some, too.
The course showed improvement, as each golfer kept his score.
The club is known for champions, of Butte and of the State.
They represent our city, and their honor is first rate.
But regardless of what year it is or what the annals say,
The game they loved to play back then is like it is today.
A wave from a familiar face or meeting on the tee,
A glimpse of mountains bold and true, a creek that flows with peace.
As the fairway stretches up ahead, it takes a dogleg right.
Yesteryear is history, and tomorrow’s looking bright.
Though drives may slice and chips may chunk and goals may seem afar,
A good day at the B.C.C. makes bogey feel like par!
Lake Avoca
Where the country club sists today once say Lake Avoca, a man-made lake formed in 1895 with the damming of Blacktail Creek. Wallace McClintok White, an early-day Butte businessman and charter member of the Butte Country Club, was the owner of the Tidewater Investment Company and developer of the Atherton Addition. He endeavored to provide Butte with a venue for aquatic liesure in the early 20th century, After building the dam that formed Lake Avoca, he then financed the construction of a grand pavilion, dance hall, picnic facilities, playground and boathouse. The lake averaged 15-20 feet deep and was a popular swimming spot in the summer, It also drew crowds if ice skating and Hockey in the winter, during which time ice was harvested in 300-lb cakes and sold to Butte Ice Company, another source of revenue for the operation. In a unique arrangement, the privately owned park was dedicated to public enjoyment and open to the public free of charge.
